Spotlight on a summer cocktail and two films on lost love

THE SIP – Tangerine & Tarragon Spritz

We’d like more summer cocktails as we hit the midway point of warm weather late in July. We turn to one of our “cocktail experts”, Martin Kovalcik, who is now devoting his cocktail talents full time to his company Thinking about Drinking, which delivers signature cocktails (including this one) to private events across Vancouver, turning gatherings into unforgettable experiences. “There’s something about The Lower Mainland in the summer—the ocean breeze drifting in, the breathtaking sunset reflection on glass towers, and patios that seem to bloom overnight,” he tells us as we eagerly await sampling his latest creation, the Tangerine & Tarragon Spritz,“and the only thing you need is a cocktail that captures the very essence of this West Coast season.” The Tangerine & Tarragon Spritz is one of Kovalcik and his team’s standout summer features—playful, elegant, and built for patio sipping. And as always, it’s easy to make it at home! “You don’t need to be a mixologist to enjoy this delicious cocktail on your own patio”, he says, “all you need is Esquimalt Bianco sweet vermouth from Vancouver Island, tarragon syrup, tangerine sorbet, Prosecco, orange bitters and a splash of soda to keep it light and refreshing.” We’re ready for another. THE VIEW #1 – Eternal

The first of our two “sci-fi-romantic” films is called Eternal. Elias is the young, nerdy science guy, specifically a climate change scientist. Anita is the free spirit and aspiring singer. They meet, and these two opposites fall quickly in love. Not long after, she becomes pregnant just as he’s being offered admittance to be part of a team researching a mysterious fracture on the ocean floor. This is serious, and a possible environmental catastrophe. Elias chooses career over love and Anita. Heartbroken, it’s agreed she will have an abortion. It’s now years later, and renowned scientist and submarine pilot, Elias, is leading the mission to the ocean floor in an attempt to seal the fracture. While there, he experiences a vision of what his life could’ve been like had he gone left instead of right. It’s a vision he can’t shake, especially after running into Anita singing in a lounge. Writer/director, Ulaa Salim has created an interesting story of lost love, sacrifice and the “what if’s” we’ve all experienced. Lead actors, Simon Sears, Nanna Øland Fabricius, give deep meaningful performances as the adult Elias and Anita, characters who still love each other even though time has taken them far from what they once had. Eternal is available for home viewing now. prodigypublicrelations.com

THE VIEW #2 – Daniela Forever

Our second “sci-fi-romantic” film is called Daniela Forever. In this film, successful Madrid club DJ, Nick, meets Daniela, an artist. They too fall in love quickly. But when she dies, Nick is unable to cope, with grief smothering every waking moment. But when a doctor friend offers him a chance to take part in groundbreaking sleep therapy that simulates reality through lurid dreams, Nick jumps at the chance. But he doesn’t follow the rules, and suddenly he is in a world again with Daniela. Director, Nacho Vigalondo has created a visually beautiful film which analyzes grief, tragic loss, and healing. Henry Golding (who we first saw in the successful film, Crazy Rich Asians), delivers a solid performance as Nick, strongly supported by Beatrice Granno as Daniela. Daniela Forever is not for everyone, but it does deliver for us, and is definitely one of the most unique films we’ve seen so far this year. The film is available for home viewing July 22. wellgousa.com
